PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish the process for conducting a moment of silence in the donor
hospital operating room (OR) by University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation (UW OTD) staff for
patients before the organ recovery procedures begin.

DEFINITIONS

Moment of Silence: A period of silent contemplation or reflection often viewed as a gesture of respect
particularly in mourning for individuals who have recently died

POLICY

A. The purpose of a UW OTD moment of silence is to:
1. Acknowledge and reflect the patient as a person.
2. Acknowledge the patient’s generosity for others.
3. Honor the patient’s family.
4. Bring greater awareness to organ donation for donor hospital staff.
5. Foster trust and confidence in the family’s understanding of the donation process, UW
OTD, and the UW OTD recovery team.
B. Each family of a patient that will have organ recovery surgery will be offered an opportunity to
participate in the moment of silence in the operating room.
C. A UW OTD staff member will discuss the moment of silence with the family.
D. UW OTD staff will offer to meet with the family of the patient after arriving at the donor hospital
and may discuss the moment of silence.
E. Donor hospital and/or UW OTD staff may help the family prepare a moment of silence. The
family may decline to participate in the preparation.
F. UW OTD staff will have discretion to determine the most appropriate moment of silence process
and experience to accommodate the patient and family of the patient.
G. UW OTD staff will conduct the moment of silence,.
H. If the family provided any original documents (i.e. handwritten notes, photographs, etc.) that
were used during the moment of silence, UW OTD staff will file a copy of the document in the
UW OTD patient record and may return original documents to the family.
