The purpose of this policy is to establish regular inspections of the sterile supplies and surgical equipment
in the University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation (UW OTD) laboratory located in University
Hospital room F8/184. UW OTD staff will inspect and verify the sterility and integrity of supplies and
equipment used for organ recovery. This process will be completed in compliance with all applicable
regulatory requirements and will follow commonly accepted medical practices.


Inventory of Sterile Items Supply Checklist


A. UW OTD surgical recovery staff will complete the inspection.
B. The inspection will occur prior to or during the first week of each quarter.
C. UW OTD staff performing the inspection will use the Sterile Items Supply Checklist, will record
completion of the inspection on the checklist, and will maintain the completed checklist.
D. UW OTD staff will manually inspect the packaging of all sterile supplies for packaging integrity
and the presence of an expiration date.
1. Sterile items approaching the expiration date will be placed in a location to be used first
before other supplies with a later expiration date.
2. Sterile items that will expire within the current or next quarter will be removed from
E. Compromised equipment will be sent to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC)
Central Services Department for re-sterilization per UWHC policy 13.18.
