TITLE
CLOSED AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD RECOVERY SYSTEM


I. PURPOSE

To define a procedure for post-operatively collecting, filtering and allowing reinfusion of the patient with
autologous whole blood.

II. POLICY

The staff physician will determine when the closed autologous blood recovery system should be
implemented. Contraindications are:

A. Malignant lesions.
B. Contaminated or infected wounds.
C. Excessive hemolysis and/or coagulation disorders.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Remove contents from package containing drain and reservoir on to OR sterile field using
acceptable sterile technique.
1. Manufacturer’s instructions on package may assist in maintaining sterile technique.
B. Attach the ATS Bag

C. Activate the ATS Bag

D. Disconnect the ATS Bag
See attached manufacture instructions
E. Adhere to Universal Blood and Body Fluid precautions when handling autologous blood recovery
system.
1. Wear gloves, masks and protective eyewear.
H Record lot number and company name of autologous blood recovery system on the perioperative
record
I. Charge for blood recovery unit on the appropriate form.
J. The time from the start of collection to expiration is 6 hours.
K. Each unit collected shall be labeled with the patient’s first name, last name, medical record number,
the date and time of initiation, and the date and time of expiration (6 hours from the start of the
collection process per AABB Standard 5.1.8A).
