TITLE

PARENTAL PRESENCE IN AFCH PACU


I. PURPOSE

To provide parent/caregiver presence as a means of support and family centered care to children
immediately post-op in the AFCH PACU. This service will be available Monday through Friday, 0730-
2000, on Saturday and Sunday, 0800-0000, in collaboration with the PACU RN and the CCLS (Certified
Child Life Specialist).
II. PROCEDURE
A. All pediatric patients receiving care in the AFCH PACU will have a Certified Child Life Specialist
who will discuss preoperatively with the family what to expect in the AFCH PACU.
1. CCLS will review the role of the parent in the PACU.
2. CCLS or AFCH Pre/Post Op staff will review the informational card, "Welcome to the Post
Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)" and explain the parent/caregiver's role in the AFCH PACU.
B. If the child is receiving Phase I care in the AFCH PACU, she/he may have two (2) parents,
guardians, or caregivers during the AFCH PACU stay. Whoever comes to PACU stays for the
duration of the stay. Must be 18 years or older.
1. No other family members, including children, will accompany parents in the AFCH PACU.
a. To lessen traffic in and out of AFCH PACU.
b. To maintain focus of care on child.
C. The Certified Child Life Specialist or AFCH Surgical Services staff must accompany the parents or
guardians to the AFCH PACU. Parents/caregivers will remain behind the curtain around the
child’s bed.
1. To maintain the privacy and confidentiality of other patients. PACU is a restricted area in the
hospital.
D. The Certified Child Life Specialist will be available to support/assist parents/caregivers as needed
and can be paged to come to the AFCH PACU.
1. To be a support to parents or guardians during the AFCH PACU stay and to be able to assist
the parents or guardians in leaving the room should an unexpected event occur. Certified Child
Life Specialists are to be of support to parents/caregivers and the AFCH PACU RN is to care
and support the child.
2. To support and distract patient during recovery room stay.
E. No cameras, cell phones, or video recorders are allowed in AFCH PACU.
1. To maintain the privacy of other patients. To encourage parents/caregivers to support the
patient.
F. No food or beverages are allowed in AFCH PACU.
1. Courtesy for child and other patients.
