TITLE
INCAPACITATED SURGICAL TEAM MEMBER
Intraoperative Safe Patient Coverage




I. Purpose
To ensure safe patient care in the event a member of the surgical team becomes incapacitated.

II. Policy
1. All OR cases will be staffed with a member from the surgical specialty, from anesthesia, and
from nursing.
2. An attending surgeon and attending anesthesiologist will be assigned to every case.
3. A circulating nurse and scrub personnel will be assigned to every case.

III. Procedure
1. If the attending surgeon becomes incapacitated, the surgical resident will care for the patient
while a surgical faculty member is called in. For completion of the scheduled case a surgical
attending within the same sub-specialty will be called first, followed by the Division Chair if
applicable, and Department Chair. In house Acute Care surgical faculty is available if needed to
stabilize until a faculty surgeon of the same specialty service arrives. If the attending
anesthesiologist becomes incapacitated, the anesthesia resident/clinical anesthetist will care for
the patient while an attending anesthesiologist is called in to complete the case. The anesthesia
call schedule, which includes multiple anesthesiologists, will be utilized. Other Anesthesiology
faculty members may be available on call in other locations within the AFCH / CSC complex.
Any member of the Department of Anesthesiology leadership may also be called if needed.
2. If a member of the nursing/scrub personnel become incapacitated, another member will be
assigned by the charge nurse. Replacement staff will be called in as needed. The OR Clinical
Operations Manager and Director of Surgical Services may also be called if needed.
i. At The American Center during call hours if nursing/scrub personnel becomes
incapacitated, the PACU call person can assist in the room until a replacement arrives.
The RCC, Resource Center Coordinator, should be notified of situation and the RCC can
initiate calls to Surgical Service personnel to be called in to complete the case.
