Title: Maintenance & Cleaning –
Carts and Inpatient Team Support
Areas



I. PURPOSE: To establish guidelines for maintaining neatness and cleanliness of
medication delivery carts and inpatient team support areas (TSA).

II. POLICY: Pharmacy technicians shall check the following items/areas each shift and take
appropriate action (dust, wash, rearrange, straighten, discard, return, retrieve, stock), if necessary.

III. PROCEDURE:
A. Medication carts
1. Boxes –Tops should be clear of unnecessary items or debris
2. Drawers –Labeled, neat, clean, orderly
3. Counters – Free of debris, clean, dusted
4. Paper supplies – Arranged and labeled neatly and in proper order.
B. TSA furniture
1. Remove all debris from countertops, shelves, and drawers. Dust and
wash, if appropriate.
C. TSA computer terminals
1. Only computer orders should be placed on the terminal.
2. For proper air circulation, nothing should be placed on top of the
monitor.
3. Environmental services should be contacted (3-1260) if a computer
terminal needs special cleaning. Special care is needed in cleaning the
monitor.
D. TSA floors
1. Environmental services should be contacted to clean, as needed.
E. TSA Bulletin boards
1. Should be neat and organized.
2. Dated materials should be removed or updated as needed (e.g.,
schedules.).
F. Medication cassette drawer cleaning will occur quarterly.
1. Carts with be taken to central services for cleaning.
2. Each clean medication cassette drawer will then be switched out with
the drawers on the patient care units by technicians on the day
following drawer cleaning.

G. Delivering carts to central services
1. The AM CUD technician will deliver each cart to central services after
carts are exchanged and returned to the pharmacy in the afternoon.
H. Returning carts back to central pharmacy
1. Central services will contact the PM CUD tech who will go to central
supply and return all carts to the central pharmacy.
I. Pharmacy technicians will ‘switch-out’ every cassette drawer on the floor with
the cassette drawers on the cart during cart exchange following the cleaning of
each drawer.
1. The cassette drawers on the floors will be pulled out and their contents
will be dumped into the new cassette drawers that were delivered to
the units.
2. The clean drawers will then be stored on the unit, while the old
drawers will be placed on the cart and delivered back to the central
pharmacy.
3. The carts will then be returned to the area outside the central pharmacy
by central service employees.
J. Documentation/Reminders
1. There will be a checklist attached to each cart for documentation.
a. The AM CUD technician will initial after the cart is delivered to
central services.
b. Pharmacy technicians will initial that each medication cassette
drawer is exchanged with the cassette drawers on the floor.
i. There will also be a reminder document attached to each cart
reminding the technicians that it is the day that medication
drawers need to be exchanged.
