I. PURPOSE

Dialysis Nurses and Technicians will be able to safely return and/or disconnect the patient from
the Gambro Phoenix® or Fresenius 2008K® hemodialysis machine in the event of an
emergency, power failure, and/or need to evacuate the inpatient hemodialysis area.

II. POLICY

A. Time permitting the patient’s blood will be returned prior to disconnect.
B. Registered nurses or Dialysis Patient Care Technicians can perform emergency
disconnect procedures.
C. Emergency disconnect procedures will be reviewed with Inpatient Hemodialysis
Department staff annually.

IV. EQUIPMENT
A. Gambro Phoenix machine or Fresenius 2008 K machine
B. 1Liter normal saline
C. Two Normal saline syringes
D. Blue plastic hemostat clamps

VI. GAMRO PHOENIX® RINSEBACK HAND CRANK PROCEDURE
Note: Gambro Phoenix machine has a 15 minute battery back-up feature in the event of
a power failure. This feature will allow you to return the patient’s blood normally.
If battery back-up exhausted or not available proceed as follows:
1. Ensure that all four clamps in the 4 position line clamp above the blood pump are
closed.
2. Clamp the venous line under the Venous Line Clamp.
3. Carefully remove the venous line from the Venous Line Clamp by depressing the
button on the Venous Line Clamp and pulling the line to the left.

4. Remove the blood pump crank from the holder at the back of the machine. Place the
crank in position at the center of the Blood Pump Rotator.
5. Clamp the arterial line in the patient’s arterial access line. Disconnect the saline line
from the cartridge connecting it to the arterial line utilizing the priming connector.
Attach a normal saline syringe to the patient’s arterial access.
6. Unclamp the saline line and the arterial line.
7. Unclamp the venous line and with the crank slowly turn the Blood Pump Rotator
counter clockwise until the blood lines and dialyzer are clear.
8. Clamp the venous line and patient’s access line to disconnect the patient from the
machine. Attach a normal saline syringe to the patient’s arterial access.
9. Flush and care for the patient’s access when time permits.
