Policy Title: Radioactive Prostatic Seed Implants

I. PURPOSE

To describe the procedures staff will follow in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) at the University
Hospital after the placement of radioactive prostatic seed implants.

II. POLICY ELEMENTS

Prostatic seeds are placed in Radiotherapy.
Prostatic seed implant patients may be admitted to the Inpatient PACU per UW Health clinical policy #2.1.9,
Admission, Care and Discharge of Patients to and from Inpatient Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

III. PROCEDURE

A. The cart used to transport the patient to the PACU will be held with the linens in place until checked by
Radiation Oncology after the patient leaves the PACU.
B. After the patient is transported to Phase II recovery area, the curtains around the PACU bay where the
patient was held are pulled and the Radiation Oncology Physicist is paged to check the area with Geiger
counter.
i. On discharge from PACU, staff will pull curtains and label the area so it is not used until Radiation
Oncology has performed its check.
ii. Staff will leave urine in Foley bag and label the Foley bag with white adhesive tape “Do Not Empty.”
iii. All linens and garbage are to be left in the bay until surveyed by Radiation Oncology.
iv. To locate any loose seeds the Radiation Oncology Department uses a Geiger counter.
