Policy Title: Care of the Adolescent Patient at The American Center

I. PURPOSE

To define the scope of care provided for adolescent patients at The American Center (TAC).

II. DEFINITIONS

An adolescent patient is defined as a patient betw een the ages of 14 and 17 years of age.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Surgical Care
i. The American Center w ill accommodate elective ambulatory surgery for adolescent patients
betw een the ages of 14 and 17 years of age.
ii. Patients under the age of 14 w ill not be accepted for elective surgery at The American Center
unless The American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH) must triage an adolescent under the age
of 14 to The American Center. This decision w ill be agreed upon by The AFCH Medical and
Nursing Surgical Directors, in collaboration w ith The American Center Medical Director.
iii. Preoperative and postoperative clinic visits for this population may be provided at The American
Center.
iv. Every attempt w ill be made to ensure appropriate accommodations are provided for this patient
population including:
a. Scheduling surgical procedures early in the day.
b. Including a Child Life Specialist as part of the patient’s care team.
c. Grouping adolescent surgical cases together.
d. Providing a Primary Nursing Model of Care for adolescent patients in pre-operative and
Phase II of post-surgical care.
e. Ensuring appropriate case selection (ASA1 or ASA2 w ith no developmental delay or
autism).
B. Medical Care
i. Patients under the age of 18 w ill not be admitted to the Overnight Care Unit at The American
Center.
ii. Patients under the age of 18 w ill be admitted to the Emergency Department. If admission is
required, the patient w ill be transferred to American Family Children’s Hospital or other hospital of
patient/family choice, subject to EMTALA and other appropriate law s and policies.
