I. POLICY STATEMENTS:
To assure a standardize manner of disposal of HD's and contaminated materials
(including gloves, gowns, syringes, needles, IV bags, pads etc.), a specific plan
for disposal will be followed by all departments. Persons involved with the
handling, transporting and disposing of HD waste must be trained about the
potential hazards and wear appropriate protective equipment.

II. PROCEDURES:
A. Disposal
1. More than trace amounts of HD waste and/ or contaminated materials will
be discarded in black containers and treated as hazardous waste.
2. Less than trace amounts of HD waste (e.g. empty IV bags, syringes, etc)
will be discarded in yellow, chemotherapy waste containers.
3. Precautions should be taken to avoid contaminating the outside of the
yellow or black waste containers. If outside contamination occurs, place
container inside yellow, chemotherapy waste bag and tape shut.
4. When the yellow or black chemotherapy waste container becomes 3/4
full, seal the plastic lid with shipping tape and place in a safe area for
pickup.
5. Staff should not compact, plunge or otherwise tamper with hazardous
drug waste to maximize use of container.
6. Contaminated linen will be treated as noted in the Hazardous Drug
Administration Policy.

B. Pickup and recordkeeping
1. All yellow, chemotherapy waste containers will be picked up and disposed
of routinely by a licensed vendor and destroyed off site in accordance with
governmental regulations.
2. All black, chemotherapy waste containers will be collected by a licensed
vendor and disposed of as hazardous waste.
3. The site supervisor will keep manifests from the vendor indicating the
disposal of hazardous drugs. (The Safety Manager will keep manifests
from the 1 & 20 S. Park locations.)
