UWMF SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

POLICY STATEMENTS:
All new employees will receive safety training before working with any hazardous
chemicals. This training must include the following components:

a) OSHA requirements
b) Operations in the work area where hazardous chemicals are used
c) Location and availability of the Hazard Communication Program,
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and chemical inventory list
d) Methods used to detect the presence or release of hazardous
chemicals
e) The physical and health hazards of chemicals in the work area
f) Recommended control measures to protect employees from exposure
g) Labeling requirements and instruction on how more information can be
obtained
h) Procedures to following in the event of a spill or release of a hazardous
chemical

PROCEDURES:
1. During General Orientation, the Safety Coordinator will review:
 The OSHA requirements
 Labeling requirements/instruction on how more information can
be obtained

2. During Clinical Orientation, the Safety Coordinator will review:
 Methods used to detect the presence or release of hazardous
chemicals
 The physical and health hazards of chemicals in the work area
 Required control measures to protect employees from exposure
 Procedures to follow in the event of a spill

3. During the Site Orientation, the supervisor will review:
 Operations in the work area where hazardous chemicals are
used

 The location of the Safety Manual (Hazardous Chemical
Communication Standard), MSDS and chemical inventory list
 Availability of personal protective equipment as it relates to their
job.

4. Contracted temporary job placement agencies will provide Hazardous
Chemical Communication Training for all its employees before deploying
them at any of the UW Medical Foundation sites.

NOTE: Appropriate follow-up with such agencies is done by the Employee
Health/Infection Control Department to ensure adequate safety training is
provided.
