Distribution: Safety Manual

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this policy is to protect employees from hazardous chemicals by
providing instruction for the safe clean-up and disposal of hazardous spills.

POLICY STATEMENT:
Each site will maintain a chemical spill kit for emergency situations. The spill kit
will be safe for the clean-up of most acid, caustic, solvent, ‘aldehyde
(glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde), alcohol and other poisonous spills. Chemical
spill kits should be stored at locations where there is greatest anticipation of a
large spill (i.e. glutaraldehyde soak rooms).

PROCEDURES:
I. Hazard Determination
1. Identify the spill and assess its hazards by reviewing the Material
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

NOTE: If the spill involves body fluids, mercury or chemotherapuetic
drugs, please refer to their specific plans in the Safety and Employee
Health/Infection Control Manuals.

II. Spill Clean-up
1. Control the spill site by doing one or more of the following:
 Close door to spill location
 Inform nearby staff
 Assign a staff member nearby to retrieve the chemical
spill kit

2. Reference the MSDS for spill clean-up/disposal procedures and
required personal protective equipment.

3. If applicable, sprinkle the spill kit product onto the spill and allow it to
neutralize the spill site (product will change colors when reacting with
chemical).

exposure, follow the below procedures:

1. If adversely exposed, reference first aid section on MSDS
2. Close the door to the spill location
3. Place towel along the lower part of the doorframe
4. Evacuate nearby occupants
5. Notify your supervisor and contact Facilities
