SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

I. DEFINITIONS:
Fire pull box means a wall mounted device that allows the occupant to manually
pull the handle to activate the fire alarm system. These units are always red in
color and will send a signal to a supervising station.

Water flow device means a detection device within wet and dry pipe sprinklers
systems that are sensitive to water flow. When water flow is detected, these
devices activate the fire alarm system and send a signal to a supervising station.

Smoke and heat detectors means typically ceiling mounted devices that are
sensitive to smoke or heat. When smoke or heat is detected, these devices will
activate the fire alarm system and send a signal to a supervising station.

II. POLICY STATEMENTS:
The UW Medical Foundation will contract with professionally trained technicians
to inspect, test, maintain and repair all fire detection devices at all managed sites.
These devices may include, but are not limited to, fire pull boxes, water flow
devices, smoke and heat detectors and sprinkler systems. Site supervisors will
assist with fire alarm tests as described in the below set of procedures.

III. PROCEDURES:
A. Schedule a test date with contractor that ensures your onsite presence and
participation;

B. Just before the test, inspect your site for any increased fire risks and ask
contractor how long the alarm test will take;

C. Call the alarm monitoring company and put your system on test;

D. Call your non-emergency fire dispatch and explain that your fire alarm system
is being tested (see Fire Impairment Policy);


E. Post Fire Impairment Tags near your security system keypads;

F. Notify occupants of the fire alarm test and that the horns may sound;

G. If possible, help with verifying the functionality of the fire horns to minimize
patient disturbance. The horns should be tested at 8am or as soon as the
facility opens. Thereafter, the horns will be bypassed and remaining devices
tripped;

H. After testing all fire detection systems, call alarm monitoring company to verify
all signals tripped. Ask to have their activity report faxed back to you to share
with the contractor and have alarm company take your system off test;

I. Call non-emergency fire dispatch and explain the fire alarm system has been
restored.

IV. RECORD RETENTION:
All test records from the contractor and the activity report from the alarm
company must be retained at the site for a period of at least 2 years.
