TITLE: REMOVING RUBBER TOPS FROM VIALS

Effective Date: September, 2005 Approval: See Authorization
Supersedes Protocol: None Contact: UW Health Pharmacy

Reviewed May 2009 August 2010

PURPOSE: To provide guidelines for the removal of rubber stoppers from vials at
UWMF Clinics.

DEFINITION: Some rubber stoppers enclosed in vials of medications contain latex
and should be detached prior to the removal of medication.

POLICY: The clinical staff will utilize the following guidelines to remove rubber
stopper from medications that are not considered ‘latex free’.

SUPPLIES: Needle nose pliers or other ‘clamping’ medical instrument

PROCEDURE: If any questions regarding this procedure, call clinical pharmaceuticals
at 287-2406 or 287-2995.

1. Wash hands and gather equipment.

2. Clean the needle nose pliers with alcohol.

3. Using the pliers or other ‘clamping’ medical instrument - pull the metal ring off.
Once the ring is off the stopper it may be removed from the vial.

Since this is not being done under sterile conditions the rest of the vial should be
discarded after use.
