IMAGING POLICY AND PROCEDURE
REQUIRED TRAINING TO OPERATE RADIOLOGY EQUIPMENT

PURPOSE: To provide guidelines for training required prior to operating radiology equipment at
the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation.
POLICY: Radiology equipment will only be used by personnel with the training and education
outlined in this policy.
1. The operator of a x−ray system must meet either of the following requirements:
Is certified by the American Board of Radiology or board eligible or
Has completed training to include the following:
Principles and operation of the fluoroscopic x−ray system.
Biological effects of x−ray.
Principles of radiation protection.
High level control options
Dose reduction techniques for x-ray systems
Applicable state and federal regulations
2. Only a licensed practitioner or a radiologic technologist who is trained in the safe use of
x−ray systems is allowed to operate these systems.
3. The use of fluoroscopic x−ray systems by radiologic technologists shall be performed
under the supervision of a licensed practitioner for the purpose of localization to obtain
images for diagnostic purposes
4. The operator must be trained on the safe operating procedures for each device
