CLINICAL POLICY AND PROCEDURE

The purpose of this policy is to assure that all University of Wisconsin Medical
Foundation (UWMF) employees, who have direct patient contact, are certified in Basic
Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
A. UWMF employees who have direct patient contact will maintain certification
every two years through the American Heart Association’s (AHA) BLS
Healthcare Provider course.
B. New UWMF employees who have direct patient contact and are not BLS certified
at the time of hire or whose certification has lapsed, will be certified or re-
certified within the first 3 months from the first day of employment.
C. UWMF employees may be allowed to take renewal (recertification) training if
their certification lapses at the discretion of the CPR Instructor or Coordinator. If
they are unable to meet renewal requirements, they will need to complete the
entire Provider course per AHA guidelines.
D. Any UWMF employee whose certification lapses greater than 6 months may be
subject to disciplinary action (per Human Resources Policy).
Exceptions will be made for individuals on medical or family leave.
E. Employees with any physical limitations, such as back pain or pregnancy, need
written permission from a physician for participation or exemption.
UWMF Employees will be compensated at their regular rate of pay to attend
UWMF CPR training during their regular scheduled working hours.
UWMF Employees may obtain CPR training outside of the UWMF CPR
program at their own expense.
1. Employees who need CPR re-certification (renewal) will attend the bi-annual
training at their clinic site.
2. Employees not able to re-certify at their clinic may register via the Clinical Staff
Education Webpage on UConnect or contact Clinical Staff Education for
additional training options.
3. Employees needing certification will obtain at Clinical Orientation or Reception
Emergency Training or may register via the Clinical Staff Education Webpage on
Clinic Directors, Managers Responsibilities
1. Track compliance of the clinic’s employees via communication with Clinical
Staff Education CPR Coordinator.
2. Conduct disciplinary action (per Human Resources Policy) with noncompliant
