OUTPATIENT SURGERY CENTER
PACU STAFFING PLAN


I. PURPOSE

To assure quality nursing care and a safe patient environment in the PACU.

II. POLICY

The PACU is staffed during the hours of 0730-1830, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 0830-1830 on
Wednesday.

III. PROCEDURE

A. The staffing plan provides an adequate number and mix of personnel to meet patient care needs. The
ASPAN “Recommended Staffing Guidelines” are utilized in calculating staffing needs.
1. Recommended Staffing Guidelines
a. Phase I level of care
i. Class 1:2 - One nurse to two patients who are:
ξ One unconscious, stable, without artificial airway, and one conscious, stable, and free of
complications
ξ Two conscious, stable, and free of complications
ii. Class 1:1 - One nurse to one patient
ξ At the time of admission, until the critical elements are met
ξ Requiring mechanical life support and/or artificial airway
ξ A second nurse must be available to assist as necessary
iii. Class 2:1 - Two nurses to one patient
ξ One critically ill, unstable, complicated patient
iv. Two licensed nurses, one of whom is a RN competent in Phase I postanesthesia nursing, are
present whenever a patient is receiving Phase I level of care.
B. The Nursing Supervisor and/or Care Team Leader and/or Senior Team member will triage and facilitate
the daily schedule and patient care.
1. Each patient will be assigned a primary nurse who will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients'
care.
C. Nurse to patient ratio will be based on patient acuity.
1. Anesthesiologist will remain with patient if procedure finishes before PACU staff arrive.
2. Cross-trained staff from Pre/Post-op call area will be utilized if unanticipated absences of scheduled
staff occur or if overall operational needs dictate.
