Title: New Employee Orientation and
Training


I. POLICY: Training for new employees will be consistent and complete. Competency in
important aspects of the job will be assessed before an employee works independently.

II. PROCEDURE: Oversight for new employee training is provided by the departmental education
and training committee in collaboration with the manager(s) for each area. An individual
training schedule will be developed for each new employee as outlined below.
A. All employees are required to have an employee physical and be cleared to work prior to
starting employment.
B. All new employees will be scheduled to attend New Employee Orientation (NEO) on their
first day of employment.
C. An individualized training schedule will be developed for each employee. The completed
schedule will be distributed to the employee’s manager, all trainers, the manager of
education and training, and the new employee.
D. Each trainer is responsible for keeping his/her training materials current and developing
competency assessment methods for the module, as appropriate.
E. Trainers will document that they have trained the new employee by signing the training
checklist or grid.
F. The employee will be assessed in important aspects of the job to determine competency
before working independently. This will be documented and placed in the employee’s file.
G. Orientation to department-wide topics is provided by the employee’s manager and
documented on the Pharmacy Department Orientation Checklist.
H. Early in the training schedule, the manager will review the job description with the employee
and provide him/her with a copy.
I. The manager will review the pharmacy department administrative standards with the
employee (policy 1.7).
J. During training, each employee shall meet with his/her manager to review training
documentation and progress. Additional training shifts may be scheduled, as needed.
K. Employees are required to complete each orientation/training form or checklist within the
time frame listed on the document. The completed checklist or form must be forwarded to
the pharmacy office. A copy of each employee's training schedule and documentation will be
placed in his/her personnel file.

L. The pharmacy coordinator of education and training and the employee’s manager will
solicit feedback regarding the employee’s training to provide further opportunities for
remediation and for quality improvement purposes.
