Title: Pharmacist Certification
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR), ACLS, PALS

I. PURPOSE: Establish minimum standards for pharmacist Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric
Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

II. POLICY:
A. Pharmacists having direct patient contact must demonstrate, on a biennial basis,
certification in Health Care Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) which includes
CPR.
B. Pharmacists staffing in intensive care unit(s) or emergency department, or
responsible for responding as part of the hospital wide Resuscitation Team for
Code Blue must demonstrate, on a biennial basis, certification in ACLS or PALS
from the American Heart Association (AHA).
C. Current certification in AHA Health Care Provider BLS or Red Cross CPR/AED
for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers is required to take ACLS and
PALS (recognition and renewal) AHA certification courses.

III. PROCEDURE:
A. Pharmacists must provide a copy of any BLS, ACLS, or PALS certification to the
pharmacy administrative office for inclusion in the employee database.
B. Required certification(s) must be maintained throughout employment. Persons
with a medical leave or other extenuating circumstances may be granted a grace
period on a case by case basis by their supervisor/manager.
