Title:
Reference Materials for clinical Nursing
Staff

I. PURPOSE:
A. To provide readily accessible reference materials for use by clinical nursing staff.
II. POLICY:
A. Each clinical unit/clinic should have its own reference materials which will provide
resources for the unit's specific patient population.
B. All materials must be current and accurate. The Manager, in collaboration with the
Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nursing Education Specialist/Clinical Educators, is
responsible for the unit library. It should be reviewed annually and decisions should be
made regarding deletion or addition of reference materials. The unit reference books do
not have to be in a single location. Each type of reference should be located where it can
be used most conveniently.
C. The following references are suggested for inclusion in either the unit reference library or
on the UWHC Intranet site (U-Connect):
1. On-line Hospital and Nursing policy and procedure references:
a. Hospital, Nursing, and Clinic policies on U-Connect

b. Laboratory Test Directory on U-Connect

c. Clinical References on U-Connect including Clinical Practice Guidelines
and Nursing Practice Guidelines.

d. Drug References available through U-Connect Quick Links: Micromedex
and Lexicomp (also available in Health Link).

e. Nurses' Guide to Clinical Procedures (Smith-Temple & Johnson, 2009)
available online for all clinicians via Ebling Library.

f. Cultural Congruence Reference on U-Connect

g. Clinical Nutrition Guidelines

2. Specific resources related to patient illnesses/needs, e.g. basic arrhythmia,
chemotherapy and basic care procedures.
