UW HEALTH NURSING ADMINISRATIVE POLICY

Policy Title: Requirement for Completion of Basic Critical Care Orientation – Inpatient Adult

This administrative policy applies to the operations and staff of the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics
Authority (UWHCA) as integrated effective July 1, 2015, including the legacy operations and staff of University
of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) and University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation (UWMF).


I. PURPOSE

To establish standards for completion of basic critical care orientation - Inpatient Adult.

II. POLICY ELEMENTS

All RN staff working in adult critical care units and intermediate care units (IMC) will demonstrate knowledge of the
content deemed pertinent to the nursing practice in their unit by the nurse manager/clinical nurse specialist/nursing
education specialist. Nurses working in critical care and IMC units will complete the designated educational offerings
and assessment methods for their units as determined by the nurse manager/clinical nurse specialist/nursing
education specialist for that unit. Required orientation offerings and assessments will be determined through an
individualized assessment of the orientee by the clinical nurse manager/clinical nurse specialist/nursing education
specialist.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Staff new to critical care/IMC will complete the required critical care offerings and assessment methods by the end of
orientation.
B. Competency in cardiac rhythm interpretation must be demonstrated by the end of orientation.
C. Nurses who are transferring from a critical care unit or IMC within UW Health may be exempt from attendance at
previously completed offerings based on the assessment by the clinical nurse manager/clinical nurse
specialist/nursing education specialist.
D. Nurses who are reinstated to work in the UW Health critical care/IMC units within the last 12 months or who come to
UW Health with prior critical care experience within the last 12 months may be exempt from course attendance based
on the assessment by the clinical nurse manager/clinical nurse specialist/nursing education specialist.
