Title:
Nursing Continuing Education Contact
Hours


I. PURPOSE:
A. Promote the importance of continuing education for nurses and provide the means to
support professional certification and continuing education for nursing staff.
B. The nursing contact hour process will assure accurate development, implementation,
evaluation and record keeping of continuing education opportunities sponsored by
Education and Development for Nursing and Patient Care Services (NED) at the
University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC).
II. POLICY:
A. Education and Development for Nursing and Patient Care Services will maintain a
provider status with the Wisconsin Nurses Association – Continuing Education Approval
Program (WNA-CEAP) for provision of contact hours
B. Nursing contact hours will only be awarded to nursing continuing education programs
which meet the requirements identified by the WNA. WNA is approved by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC-CAO) to designate
provider status.
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Nursing contact hour offerings are the property of Education and Development for
Nursing and Patient Care Services (NED).
1. Prior to an educational offering, a consultation with the primary nurse planner in
NED is required for all nursing contact hour requests in the form of a continuing
education (CE) submission request.
2. The Primary Nurse Planner for nursing contact hours is the Director of Education
and Development for Nursing and Patient Care Services.
3. Upon receipt of a CE submission request, the Primary Nurse Planner will assign a
Nurse Planner to facilitate the CE process.
4. The Nurse Planner is a designated UWHC – NED Nursing Education Specialist
(NES) who assures the ANCC-COA educational design criteria are used to
develop, implement, and evaluate the learning activity.
5. All contact hour documentation is retained by the department of Education and
Development for Nursing and Patient Care Services.
