Research: Obtaining Nursing Resources
and Support


I. PURPOSES:
A. To ensure a consistent process for obtaining nursing support for a study to be conducted
at UW Hospital and Clinics
B. To provide a mechanism for all researched to obtain input and feedback from Nursing
C. To provide a process that empowers Nursing to support the Science mission of UW
Health.

II. POLICY:
A. When nursing time and/or resources will be used to carry out a research study at UW
Hospitals and Clinics, the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or research team must establish
communication with unit/department manager and Clinical Nurse Specialist (where
applicable) before the studies’ initiation.
1. The PI and/or research team are encouraged to initiate this conversation early in
the study’s development process.
B. The form “request for UW Health Nursing Resources for Research” (see related
documents) must be completed by the PI and/or an appropriate research team member to
document agreements made, according to the structure outlined below.
C. PIs are strongly encouraged to present their study to the Nursing Research Council to
obtain nursing input and discuss feasibility when they involve the following:
1. UW Health nurses as research subjects (e.g. Focus groups, observations)
2. A focus on nursing practice and/pr process
3. Nursing resources are requested
D. If the research involves the use of human subjects (staff or patients), the researcher must
follow the guidelines established by the Health Sciences-Institutional Review Board (HS-
IRB) as appropriate, according to UW Health Administrative Policy 4.24: Clinical
Research Guidelines.

III. PROCEDURES:
1. Requests for nursing resources and/or time, for the purposes of research, must be
discussed between the PI/research team and nurse leader in the unit/area (i.e. Nurse
Manager and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist) to ensure the request is feasible in practice
and/or accommodations can be made.
2. Complete the for “Request for UW Health Nursing Resources for Research” (see related
documents) to the document agreements made:
a. Nursing resources may include any assistance provided by the UW Health
nursing staff related to the implementation of the study protocol.

investigators regarding eligible patients), data collection (such as
additional tests, labs, VS, etc), study assessments and or interventions.
b. Requests made of nursing staff must be within the scope of their license.
3. Contact the Chair or Administrative Liaisons for the Nursing Research Council if
the PI would like to present an overview of the proposed research study and obtain
input and discuss feasibility.
a. The study team is encouraged to share their findings once the study is
complete
4. Once the study is complete collaborate with the participating clinical area(s)’
Nurse Manager and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist to communication findings to
nursing staff.
