Title: Locked Bathroom Access

I. PURPOSE

To gain access to a locked bathroom on general care adult inpatient units, in
situations when staff have reason to believe that the person in the locked bathroom
has become incapacitated or needs assistance.

II. PROCEDURE

A. Locate the narrow slot above the door handle.
B. Insert any thin, sturdy article into the slot and twist. (Any coin or similarly shaped
item, such as a washer, will work for this purpose.)
C. The door should unlock, providing access to the patient.
