Title: Network Equipment Management
Policy

I. PURPOSE

This policy defines the established standards for the deployment of network-related
equipment within the UW Health computing environment.

II. SCOPE

This policy applies to all users of UW Health networks and network-related equipment.

Exceptions to the standards in this policy may introduce security risks to the computing
environment and increase support costs to UW Health.

Enforcement of this policy is the responsibility of the following people:
ξ UW Health IS Director, Technical Services
ξ UW Health IS CTO

III. DEFINITIONS

Network: An electronic infrastructure that connects computers and electronic devices to
allow for data transfer and application communication.

UW Health Computing Environment: All central processing, network, printer, desktop,
personal, and other devices (including both network attached and standalone devices)
used in support of UW Health business and managed by UW Health Information
Services.

IV. POLICY

Only UW Health IS may purchase and deploy network equipment. Users may not
purchase and deploy network equipment on their own without UW Health IS permission
and assistance.

Prior to the selection and purchase of new network equipment, UW Health IS must
approve all network equipment that is to be deployed within the UW Health computing
environment.

UW Health IS, or individuals granted explicit rights by UW Health IS, may connect
workstations and other devices to the UW Health computer network. Unauthorized
personnel may not attempt to establish a connection to the UW Health computer
network. This requirement applies to both wired and wireless network connections. This
requirement does not apply to separately secured segments of the network that were
created for non-UW Health populations, such as the free public wireless network or UW
Health affiliate virtual local area networks.

Wireless access points and base stations that broadcast signals in physical UW Health
spaces must be installed by UW Health IS. Users and affiliates may not install their own
access points to any wireless network in physical space operated by UW Health without
the explicit permission of UW Health IS. UW Health IS ensures that wireless data
transmissions to and from a device connected to the UW Health internal wireless
network are secured using encryption. UW Health IS may impose additional
transmission security measures as necessary.

V. PROCEDURES
