Extension Cords


PE.07.40.01 Specs for Extension Cords

I PURPOSE

To provide a safe electrical environment for patients and employees by establishing minimum
specifications for extension cords.

II POLICY

See also UWHC Administrative Policy 12.63 Electrical Safety

A. Extension cords will not exceed 10 feet in length, except for those used during
construction, remodeling, or special events.

B. The minimum wire size for an extension cord shall be #16 AWG.

C. The minimum number of conductors in an extension cord will be three. One conductor
will be a ground conductor.


III FORMS None.

IV PROCEDURE

A. The grounding lead is to be cut 3/8" longer than the other conductors.
B. When needed the Plant Engineering Department will provide extension cords upon
request.
