PE.04.10.08 PE “Code Pink” for Infant/Child Abduction
I. PURPOSE
To define the role of the Facilities & Engineering Services Department in a Code Pink
(infant/child abduction) situation.

II. POLICY
UW Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) will strive to reduce the likelihood of a successful child
abduction from UWHC. To do this, the hospital will train staff-members regarding child
abductions, and will develop a multi-disciplinary, planned response for child abductions,
making use of appropriate in-house and outside resources.

III. PROCEDURES

A. Incident Prevention and Training

1. Information for all staff members regarding initial response in the event
of an abduction will be included in New Employee Orientation and the
Annual Safety and Infection Control Training and the hospital’s
emergency flip chart. This policy and detailed response information will
be included in the Facilities & Engineering Services New Employee
Dept. Orientation.

2. The plan will be drilled periodically for the purpose of training and plan
improvement.

B. Response to an incident. The following describes the roles of various departments and
staff during an incident.

Initial Notification: The first staff member notified of possible child abduction will:

1. Obtain the child’s name, age and room number, along with the name of the
person reporting the possible abduction. Call security at 263-7065 and
report this as a possible abduction. Relay a full physical description to
Security if possible.

2. If the child’s whereabouts are still unknown after a cursory search by the
staff, notify the Nursing Coordinator and direct Paging to announce a “Code
Pink” hospital-wide. Post a staff member at all unsecured areas, exits and
elevators adjacent to the unit. Keep all visitors and employees on the unit

paging receives a call they will relay the information to the 911
dispatcher, who will send a security officer to verify that the child has
been recovered. If the Nursing Coordinator calls for the “Code Pink” list
to be paged, initiate the page.

Plant Engineering:

1. Facilities & Engineering Services Duty Mechanics:
Obtain all available two-way radios and report to the command center
(B6/355 TLC Conference Room) for instructions. (It will be the
responsibility of the Duty Mechanics to retrieve all two-way radios and
return them to D4/163.)

2. Facilities & Engineering Services Computer Mechanic:

a. Paging will notify the Facilities & Engineering Services Computer
Room.
