Title:
Emergency Power Systems


EC.02.05.03 EP1-6
I. Purpose:

To define the emergency power systems provided by the University of Wisconsin
Hospital and Clinics.

II. Policy:

The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics has reliable emergency
electrical power sources.

III. Procedure:

A. The emergency electrical generators provide emergency power automatically
upon failure of commercial power sources. The generators that provide the
emergency power are maintained weekly and tested monthly to assure a
reliable source of emergency power. Automatic transfer switches are checked
and operation verified with each test of the generators.

B. Fuel for these generators is maintained on site, and will allow at least 18
hours of independent power operations. Refueling arrangements are
maintained with vendors to assure the level of fuel does not fall below this
level.

C. Emergency Power Systems

1. Alarm systems
2. Exit route signs
3. Exit signs illumination
4. Emergency communications systems
5. Elevators (at least one for non-ambulatory patients)
6. Bone, blood, and tissue storage
7. Medical air compressors
8. Medical vacuum systems
9. Surgical vacuum systems
10. Operating rooms
11. Recovery rooms
12. Emergency and urgent care areas
13. Other life support systems
