Title: Mapping the Distribution of
Utility Systems & Controls


EC.02.05.01 EP7,8
I. Purpose:

To provide a policy for maintaining the mapped distribution of utility systems and utility
system controls in the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC).

II. Policy:

The Facilities & Engineering Services Department maintains drawings and documents
mapping the distribution of all utility systems in UWHC, including the following systems:

A. Electrical Distribution
B. Oxygen Distribution
C. Medical/Surgical Vacuum System
D. Medical Air Distribution
E. Nitrous Oxide Distribution
F. Water Distribution
G. Steam Distribution
H. Chilled Water Distribution
I. Control Air Distribution
J. Sewer System
K. Nurse Call System
L. Overhead Paging System
M. Pocket Paging System
N. Engineering Two-Way Radio Communications System
O. Pneumatic Tube System

The drawings indicate the location of controls for the partial or complete shutdown of
each utility system. The drawings are maintained to further ensure, through training of
Facilities & Engineering Services personnel, that proper procedures are followed in the
shutdown of any utility system component.

The Chair of the Utility Team is responsible for coordinating meetings to review these
documents which are located in the Planning Room of the Facilities & Engineering
Services Department.

III. Procedure:

A. At least annually, the Chair of the Utility Team coordinates a meeting to review all
drawings of utility system distributions.

B. The Utility Team reviews completed construction projects monthly to capture any
utility system distribution changes. When construction or remodeling results in a
change to the distribution of any utility system, the appropriate drawings are
updated by UWHC Facilities Planning.

C. The Utility Team reviews the updated drawings to verify that the correct changes
have been made. Upon the team’s approval, Facilities Planning stores the
updated drawings in the Planning Room.
