Education reimbursement is available to physicians through various programs maintained by the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation (UWMF), the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH), and the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics (UWHC). Physicians can use his or her professional development funds to pay for non-taxable education or have his or her UWMF department pay for non-taxable education.
As a condition for receiving department-paid education reimbursement, a physician must agree to continue employment at UWMF, at a 50% appointment or greater, for a period of at least one year after the date of reimbursement, plus another year for each full $10,000 of department-paid education reimbursement amount beyond the first $10,000, up to a maximum retention period of three years. If a physician receives department-paid education reimbursement and does not continue employment for that retention period, then he or she must repay UWMF for 100% of the reimbursement amount. UWMF may deduct the repayment from compensation that would otherwise be paid to the physician.
