The UWHC Nursing Informatics staff in conjunction with multidisciplinary team members consider the impact of technology on clinical practice. The following method/s techniques are utilized prior to piloting and understanding the impact of technology on practice:
Analyzes systems that impact nursing practice and the ability of nursing to optimize nursing practice: clinical practice, management, education and research
Investigates communications, workflows (conditions and elements), models, and processes in order to design and implement as well as test the effectiveness and efficiency of computerized information, telecommunications and network systems for nursing practice
Studies the effects of these systems impacting nursing practice on an ongoing basis

The ANCC Nurse Informatics Certification was established in 1994. There are currently more than 680 (ANCC, 2007) certified nurse informaticists in the United States.
