To prevent the spread of infection among patients, hospital staff and visitors and minimize risk of exposure to a wide range of potential infections, all employees are required to follow Standard Precautions for all contact with moist patient materials including blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions, mucous membranes or non-intact skin.
- Wear gloves before touching blood or internal body fluids
- Wear a gown, mask and protective eyewear when the activity may cause splashes or sprays of blood or body fluids
- Dispose of needles, sharps and all other medical waste in the proper containers
- Specific situations and specific departments may require additional precautions
