Active Shooter (Code Yellow) - Inside UW Health, About Us, Employee Handbook (UWHC), Health, Safety and Security

Focus

Code Yellow is UWHC’s code describing an individual who is actively displaying or shooting a weapon in the workplace. Employees should respond by using the OUT Strategies. Get out, Call out, Hide out, or as a last resort Take out the shooter.

Employees should dial 9-1-1 to summon police and if possible call Hospital Security (890-5555). Security will make an overhead announcement for the CSC and AFCH. Responding police officers will immediately engage or contain the shooter in order to stop the threat.

If you choose to shelter in place (Hide out), go to a room that can be locked or barricaded, turn off lights, close blinds, block windows if possible, turn off any radios or devices that will emit sound, turn your cell phone or pager to silence, and keep yourself out of sight. Cover and protection should be sought behind concrete walls, thick desks and filing cabinets.

When there is resolution to the situation and the threat is deemed over by police, UWHC Paging will announce "Code Yellow All Clear" three times on the overhead page. Emergency pagers will announce "Code Yellow All Clear" in offsite clinics where there is no overhead paging. Staff carrying emergency pagers in these locations will release staff with the all clear notification.
