Steps to Obtain Access and Training for Health Link (Epic)

Intended audience: These instructions should be used only for employees of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), Waisman Center or employees who are employed by the UW Medical Foundation (UWMF) but are supervised by the SMPH. This includes, but may not be limited to medical program assistants, physician secretaries, administrative assistants and department/division/section administrators. If you have questions regarding whether this or a different set of instructions should apply to you, contact Lisa Risberg, senior security consultant, UW Health Information Technology Services.

Introduction: UW Health must adhere to state and federal laws-including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-as well as Joint Commission regulations and UW Health policies and procedures in determining which individuals may access UW Health electronic systems that contain patient information. Thus, UW-Madison employees who have access to patients, patient belongings and/or patient medical records must complete several steps prior to receiving access to Health Link (Epic) or other electronic systems.
