These services fall under a number of definitions.
Telehealth is a broad term for remote healthcare that includes both clinical and non-clinical services. Digital technologies are used for bridging together users across separate locations for the delivery of medical care, health education or public health services.
Telemedicine is a care delivery method using electronic communication technology that links a patient and a provider who are not at the same location for consultation and clinical diagnosis.
A growing body of evidence shows that telehealth can not only expand access to services but also create cost savings. For many patients, telehealth increases the ability to access timely care while reducing the potential inconvenience of travelling long distances or being transferred to another health care facility.
As telehealth technologies evolve, it will be important for policymakers to understand the prospective benefits and embrace a framework that allows patients, providers and payers to incorporate technological innovations in care delivery.
