The Neuropsychology Laboratory performs comprehensive neuropsychological examinations for patients with known or suspected changes in cognition (memory, thinking and attention).
Evaluations are performed for patients with closed head injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cancer, learning problems, concussions and traumatic brain injuries. Patients with epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, Parkinson's disease, memory disorders and many other neuropsychological conditions are also seen at our clinic.
Services include comprehensive cognitive/behavioral assessments of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric outpatients and inpatients, memory assessments, specialty procedures (including the Wada test, pre-/post-testing for deep brain stimulation (DBS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)) and assessments of children and students with many different learning problems relating to medical conditions.
There are four faculty providers who work in the Neuropsychology Laboratory. Dr. Bruce Hermann, Dr. Jana Jones and Dr. Brian Bell see adult patients only. Dr. Alanna Kessler sees pediatric patients.
Our psychometrists and fellow conduct much of the neuropsychological testing as part of the overall evaluation. Information on the role of a psychometrist and what neuropsychological testing is like is available on uwhealth.org.
In 2009, the Neuropsychology Laboratory adopted a new process for scheduling outpatients to ensure that patients are seen within an appropriate timeframe and provide communication about our access.
We now require the referring doctor to fax or mail us a note explaining who the patient is, the concerns and if there is a guardian we should contact instead of the patient. If the patient and/or doctor are outside the UW system or the patient is being referred from UW Psychiatry, please send reports/records relevant to the patient’s mental health.
Our team will triage referrals once all information is received and then the patient or patient’s guardian will be contacted within one week after the information is received to schedule an appointment. No special forms need to be filled out.
Please call the Neuropsychology Laboratory at (608) 263-5430 with any questions. A full or half-day is reserved for each patient, depending on referral issues, so the number of appointments is limited. Many times, we are scheduling out months into the future.
