Neurology and Neurosurgery - Departments & Programs, UW Health

The Neurology and Neurosurgery Service Line is one of the six UW Hospital and Clinics priority service lines. It is dedicated to providing a continuum of care for all patients and developing systems that support the specific needs of these patients.

The Neurology and Neurosurgery service line is one of six priority services at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. The service line began formally in FY2005 with a business plan that spanned FY2005-FY2009. The service line is led by Drs. Dempsey (Chair of Neurological Surgery) and Shannon (Chair of Neurology), serving as the co-medical directors, and Cheryl Hoeth, Service Line Director. During this time, program development and building the identity of the service line within UW Health was the main focus.

In FY2009, the service line business plan was updated for next five fiscal years with the goal of further engaging stakeholders, program expansion and increasing communication about the efforts and accomplishments of these important services. In 2014, the service line business plan became a 3 year rolling plan; soliciting input from stakeholders on a routine basis to ensure its programs and services were achieving goals and future priorities reflected the latest state of the art technology and evidence based medicine.

Activity in the service line includes inpatient discharges and outpatient encounters related to Neurology, Neurosurgery and neurodiagnostic departments. The service line has a multi-disciplinary approach in many programs and specifically collaborates with the American Family Children's Hospital for pediatric programs and the Oncology and Orthopedic service lines.
