Performs calibration procedures with electrophysiology amplifiers and computer based
data recorders

Electrically interfaces data outputs of capnography, oximetry, and respiratory inductive
plethysmographs to inputs of electrophysiology amplifiers and computer based recorders

Selects appropriate transducers for use with the patient according to polysomnographer’s
order

Applies transducers to patient
Performs operational checks of analog and digital recording devices prior to initiating the
study

Insures patient comfort during testing
Identifies and corrects artifacts during the course of recording during sleep
Insures the accuracy and safety of instruments in use during recording with patients
Sets up and maintains: nasal/oral thermocouples; impedance converters; EOG, EEG, EKG,
EMG, surface electrodes; oximetry probes, capnography sampling lines; and inductive
plethysmogram converters.

Removes transducers from the patient post testing
Cleans and/or sterilizes transducers after use
Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of electrophysiology recording instruments.
Corrects equipment malfunctions that occur during patient recording
Applies mask and ventilation circuit to patient
Adjusts positive end expiratory and inspiratory pressure to maintain airway patency and
optimize therapeutic response

Corrects apparatus artifacts and malfunctions
Utilizes sterile or aseptic techniques when applicable
Exchanges patient care equipment according to standard frequency established
Maintains primary patient care equipment in the clean and orderly state
Corrects equipment malfunctions that occur while on the patient

Prepares preliminary data report form and communicates it to the polysomnographer
Recognizes and responds to cardiac emergencies during sleep studies
Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation/ AED until relieved by paramedics
Provide set up and day tech duties as needed

SET UP
Scores polysomnograms and prepares lab reports as needed
Verifies physician orders for all scheduled procedures
Installs ambulatory procedure recorders on patients
Prepares the lab computer network workstations for all scheduled procedures
Obtains and sets up any extraordinary equipment for scheduled procedures (crib, fan,
rollaway, commodes, urinals, etc.)

Calibrates and performs operational checks of all instruments for scheduled procedures
Sets up all patient preparation tray tables in each operational room, including disposable
supplies, proper electrodes, and transducers

Ensures that all rooms are clean and outfitted with proper blankets, towels, and amenities
Ensures that proper CPAP, BiPAP, and ASV headgear and clean tubing are setup in each
appropriate room

Assists in the setup of home monitoring systems
Monitors inventory of consumable supplies- communicates low stock issues to the Lead or
Chief Technician

Corrects instrumentation malfunctions as needed

DAYTIME TECHNICIANS
Verifies patient confirmation for scheduled procedures- makes patient contacts as
necessary

Compiles and reviews all required paper work for each scheduled procedure
Performs daytime polysomnographic procedures
Performs Multiple Sleep Latency Tests
Performs Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests
Installs ambulatory procedure recorders on patients
Ensures patient comfort and safety while in the lab- responds to hospitality needs

Demonstrates effective decision making ability in guiding workflow within the lab
Prioritizes and assigns tasks to night shift personnel
Ensures compliance with all applicable safety and infection control standards
Communicates personnel and instrument issues to the Chief Tech
Maintains the nightly procedure calendar of patients and staff
Reviews all procedure orders for night shift personnel
Responsible for proper instrumentation calibration and set up for nocturnal procedures
Ensures continuity of care for all patients in the lab- assumes the duties of night staff
when appropriate

Troubleshoots and makes minor repairs to lab instruments
Demonstrates effective written and spoken communication skills
Responds to complex issues and applies policy where appropriate
Responds to patient inquires with appropriate information
