American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH) - Departments & Programs, UW Health

Dedicated in July 2007 and open for business in late August, American Family Children's Hospital (AFCH) provides patients and families from throughout Wisconsin a place to heal in a soothing, child-friendly environment.

With inpatient rooms approximately double in size of the former UW Children's Hospital, the 61-bed American Family Children's Hospital offers an array of family-friendly amenities and high-tech features designed to enhance care. A second phase of fundraising - currently under way - will allow the hospital to ultimately reach an 80-bed capacity, build a suite of pediatric operating rooms and complete a pediatric radiology unit.

Our world-class team of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals provide everything from preventive health care to highly specialized programs. These include a pediatric intensive care unit, an internationally recognized transplant surgery program, a children's cancer center, a pediatric asthma center and many others.

A warm, family-centered environment is enhanced through special activities such as a Child Life program, a Pet Therapy program, a Hospital School run by the Madison Metropolitan School District, family lodging at the nearby Ronald McDonald House, and much more.

Are there maps or directions for AFCH families to find the cafeteria and Mendota Market?

Please send people to the Guest Depot or the AFCH Security Office to pick up a map and get directions to the cafeteria and other UWHC locations. The Guest Depot hours are 7am-8pm Monday-Friday and 7am-3pm on weekends. The AFCH Security Office, across from the main elevators, is available 24 hours a day.

Can I buy a bike helmet for my child through American Family Children's Hospital

You can buy bike helmets from Kohl's Safety Center. Contact them at safety@uwhealth.org or (608) 890-8041.

How can I reserve a room in the AFCH?

There are a number of meeting rooms in the AFCH. The rooms are, for the most part, small and intended primarily for smaller meetings and for clinical consultations. Due to a lack of space in AFCH, there were purposely no large meeting rooms/educational spaces provided in AFCH. Meetings/classes for more than 35 should be scheduled into rooms in the CSC or HSLC.

The Chapel is not available for any purpose outside the Spiritual Care for our staff, patients and families. Any services or faith-based uses must be coordinated with the Spiritual Care Department. Physician Team Rooms are not listed and may only be used for meetings by special arrangement with the Clinical Nurse Manager/Physician Team Members. The staff lounges on P5 and in the Peds Specialty Clinic are not designed as meeting spaces and are not listed.

How do I order keys for American Family Children's Hospital rooms?

You can order keys for American Family Children's Hospital rooms the same way as you would for the UW Hospital by using the Facilities and Engineering Services Request.

I made a pledge to the Radiothon. Who can I contact about that donation?
