Learning Center - Departments & Programs, UW Hospital and Clinics

Learning Center nurses work to create trusting relationships with patients and families to actively involve them in the education process.  Our nurses work to empower patients and families with confidence and competence to help master the skills and retain the information they need to care for themselves or their loved ones at home.  We collaborate with bedside nurses, providers, Diabetes Management Service and Nutrition to best meet the needs of patients and their families.

Learning Center Resources

Health Facts for You

From medication instructions to vital information about a variety of diseases, conditions, and procedures, you can help patients learn more about how they can care for themselves with an extensive library of Health and Nutrition Facts For You

Ambulatory Teaching

Pre-operative teaching sessions are taught by Learning Center nurses Monday-Friday for a variety of adult and pediatric surgical populations and pediatric diabetes. We also partner with Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging (WIHA) to teaching a falls prevention class in the community called “Stepping On.”

Inpatient Teaching

Learning Center nurses are available Monday-Saturday 8am-4:30pm and support patients, families and staff at University Hospital, American Family Children's Hospital and UW Health at The American Center. Any licensed provider may request a consult for assistance with diabetes self-management education (pediatric and adult), heart failure, anticoagulation and alcohol brief intervention.
