FAQ

Are old work computers sold after we receive new computers? When and where does this happen?

We do still sell surplus computers at the UWHC Warehouse. All computers are completely wiped clean and have "no operating system" - which means you have to be able to load Windows or some other system in order for it to function. These are older computers and are sold as they are. This means we are told they work when we get them, but after that there is no guarantee.

How do I request UW-Madison Environment, Health and Safety pick something up?

If you have items to be picked up by the UW-Madison Environment, Health and Safety Department:

  1. Fill out and submit a Chemical Disposal/Surplus Pickup Request Form online.
  2. Then print a Surplus Chemicals Form, fill it out and attach it to the items being picked up.
  3. Leave items for pickup at the source (in the room where it was generated). Do not bring items out to the loading dock other than lamps and ballasts. We cannot let this space become a potential safety hazard.
  4. A representative from EH&S does pickups throughout the hospital every Monday.

How do I get an FMIS number for a new item?

The best way to have your equipment evaluated for a FMIS tag is to submit an Equipment Update form. A technician will evaluate the equipment type and determine if the equipment needs to be part of the hospital's equipment management system. This system uses various criteria to evaluate the risk associated with each type of patient care equipment. The results of the evaluations is a risk criteria that determines the maintenance requirements and thus the need for a FMIS number.

The hospital policy covering this system is Environmental Safety.

What does the hospital do with medical equipment that has reached the end of it's useful life?

Most medical equipment is either traded in or sent back to companies as we purchase new equipment. If equipment comes down as surplus we look first for a medical supply vendor to see what the resale cost is and what we can get for it. Then we would look at non-profit organizations to see if they can use it. Very rarely is any equipment left to donate as our first obligation is to get as much monetary benefit as we can for the institution first.
