ECMO Machine

ECMO Machine - Departments & Programs, UW Hospital and Clinics, ECMO

Focus

With the ECMO machine, blood flows through the tubes and is pushed along by the turning motion of the pump. The flow number is higher when the machine is doing more of the work and decreases as the patient needs less support.

The machine’s lung puts oxygen in the blood and removes carbon dioxide. The blood is then warmed to body temperature and returned to the patient through the arterial or one portion of the tube. The returned blood is high in oxygen.
