Approval of Outside Activities

Approval of Outside Activities - Departments & Programs, UW Hospital and Clinics, Compliance, Code of Conduct/Ethics, Summary of Reports and Approvals Required Under the UWHC Code of Ethics on Conflicts of Interest

Focus

Before engaging in non-exempt outside activities, you are required to obtain written approval from the Vice President level officer responsible for your area. The request should be submitted to the appropriate director or administrative head of your operational area who will forward it to the appropriate Vice President. The request should describe the nature of the activity, the estimated time involved, the estimated duration of the activity, and whether remuneration is expected. The attached form can be used.

The primary focus of the review of these requests will be whether they involve conflicts of interest or will otherwise interfere with hospital duties. In the absence of such conflicts or interference, requests will generally be approved.

Some outside activities have been exempted from the prior approval requirement. See the attached "Outside Activities Exempt from the Prior Approval Requirement."

If you are a full time employee of UWHC, state law forbids you to be employed by UW and/or any state agency if the state agency pay exceeds $12,000. Consult with UWHC General Counsel if this restriction may apply to you.
