UW Policy 7.01 Pathology Specimen Care and Handling

Specimen Processing:

Specimens should be placed fresh (no fixative) in a sterile screw top container

Outreach Specimen Processing:

Place tissue on a saline-saturated gauze in the bottom of a suitable-sized sterile specimen container. Submit specimen with request to UWHC Hospital Laboratory. 

Specimen Transport:

Within UWHC pneumatic tube station 501 or hand delivered to UWHC Specimen Receiving.


Tissue specimens must arrive in UWHC Surgical Pathology Specimen Receiving Room by 3:30 pm, Monday through Thursday only, to be prepared for interpretation the following day. Some specimens, due to their size or special processing requirements, require longer turnaround times.


Tissue received on Friday will routinely be prepared for interpretation on the next working day (usually Monday).


Situations may exist that would require results prior to the routine turnaround time. The attending physician should consult with the on-duty Surgical Pathologist to evaluate the circumstances and make arrangements for non-routine processing.


Additional Information:

Normal laboratory hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 7:00 pm. Outside normal hours, the Surgical Pathology resident-on-call should be contacted. The call list is available in the OR call schedule book, the UWHC message center (608) 262-2122, or online at the UConnect Web Paging link.
