Specimen Transport:

For best specimen integrity transport specimen to the laboratory on coolant pack.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Swabs other than nasopharyngeal flocked swabs are not acceptable.


Transport media received without a swab are not acceptable.


Refrigerated M4 or room temperature M4 (M4RT) are not acceptable.

Test Limitations:

Proper collection and transport of specimen is of critical importance in direct detection.

FluMist vaccine can result in a false positive PCR for influenza for up to 21 days after administration.


Positive influenza A and influenza B results on inpatients, including those from ED and subsequently admitted, will be called to ordering source.


Specimens should not be submitted for test of cure.


Do not order simultaneously with Respiratory Virus Panel with Bordetella, PCR (RVPBPCR).
