Test Component:

Urine immunofixation and a quantitative urine protein.

Methodology: Gel Electrophoresis

Clinical Information:

Immunofixation is used to test for and classify light chains (Bence Jones protein) in urine. Diseases associated with light chains in urine include gammopathy,amyloidosis, multiple myeloma and other plasma cell dyscrasias.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri, dayshift - day varies.

In-Lab Turnaround Time: 3 - 5 days.

Stat In-Lab Turnaround Time: Not available stat.

Specimen: Random urine

Collection Container: Sterile screw cap container

Collection Instructions:

No preservative. First morning collection is the preferred sample. Random collection is acceptable, but least desirable.

3 months for concentrated sample

Outreach Specimen Processing:

Transport a minimum of 10 mL of specimen in a sterile container with coolant pack if coming from clinic locations.

Specimen Transport:

Transport entire collection in a sterile screw cap container to Laboratory. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic labs.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Urines with bloody supernatants are acceptable but not desireable. Urines with preservatives are not acceptable.

Interpretation:

A written interpretive report is issued as a separate report.

 

Test Limitations:

Urine Immunofixation Electrophoresis requests more frequent than 14 days will automatically be cancelled by the laboratory system.
