Order only if ANA is postive.
DNA antibodies, double-stranded (dsDNA) testing is performed in the evaluation of the patient suspected to have SLE.
dsDNA antibodies are found in 60% of patients with SLE, most having active disease. Other connective tissue diseases and drug-induced lupus rarely have dsDNA antibodies. Levels of dsDNA antibodies may rise and fall in association with disease activity in SLE (Ref: Arthritis Rheum 33:634-43,1990).
