Test Component:

Supernatant color, nucleated cell count, red blood cell count and differential performed from a Wright's stained cytospin.

Methodology: Manual or Impedance Count

Clinical Information:

CSF morphology analysis from patients with known or suspected leukemia or lymphoma.

Days Performed: Daily, 24 hours.

In-Lab Turnaround Time: Differential- 1 day. May be delayed if review by a pathologist is necessary.

Stat In-Lab Turnaround Time: Cell count 1 hour.

Specimen: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or ventricular fluid

Collection Container: Numbered specimen tube from sterile disposable lumbar puncture tray

Also Acceptable: Sterile container

Collection Instructions:

CSF samples for morphology analysis from patients with known or suspected leukemia or lymphoma only. Indicate collection tube number. Specimen must be placed in container that does not contain an anticoagulant.

Collection Volume: 1 mL

Pediatric Collection Volume: 0.5 mL

Transport specimen to UWHC Hospital Laboratory immediately. Transport with coolant pack if coming from clinic location.

Unacceptable Criteria:

Grossly bloody samples that are clotted are not acceptable.
