Clinical Information:

Histologic diagnosis of hematologic and other disorders; ancillary studies performed as appropriate.

Days Performed: Mon-Fri, dayshift by appointment only. Call 263-8044 before collection.

Specimen: Bone marrow aspirate and biopsy

Collection Instructions:

A CBC with Differential (includes platelet count) and reticulocyte count must be ordered in conjunction with bone marrow collection. Bone marrow samples are collected by a physician at the bedside and coverslip smears are prepared by the laboratory technologist.

 

Samples coming from clinic locations should be collected into balanced oxalate for morphologic assessment or directly smeared onto clean coverslips or slides from non-anticoagulated bone marrow (allowed to air dry - no fixatives, unstained). Collection in a lavendar (EDTA) tube is also acceptable. Refer to the individual tests for collection instructions for non-morphologic tests (eg. cytogenetics, flow cytometry, etc).

Stability Ambient:

Unfixed slides are stable for 7 days

Sample Analyzed: Wright stained bone marrow aspirate coverslips

Specimen Transport:

Transport specimen to laboratory as soon as possible.

Interpretation:

A hematopathologist's written interpretive report is issued as a separate report.
