Collection Instructions:

NOTE: Cyst aspirations do not require the assistance of the Fine Needle Aspiration Team. Collect cyst aspirations per standard protocol. Express the fluid into a sterile container; refrigerate the specimen until transport. DO NOT submit the specimen in a syringe.  If a cyst aspirate yields less than 5 ml of fluid, add saline to the specimen to bring the volume up to 5 ml.  Specimens submitted with less than 5 ml of fluid may dry out prior to being processed by cytology, negatively affecting sample quality.

Specimen Transport:

Refrigerate specimen until transport. Place specimen inside a biohazard bag with the request form in the outside pocket of the bag. Transport specimen to laboratory within 1 hour of collection.

Test Limitations:

Abnormal findings must be correlated with history and other test results.

Additional Information:

Paperwork must include patient's name, medical record number, date of birth, specimen source, collection date, clinic and phone number, clinician's full name and pager number, and pertinent history.
